Pigment Information
This color contains the following pigments:
PY128-Cromophtal Yellow 8G
PY43-Brown Ochre
PG38-Phthalo Green
PY53-Nickel Titanium Yellow
Pigment Name
PY128-Cromophtal Yellow 8G
Pigment Type
organic, disazo condensation
Properties
Chromophytal Yellow PY 128 is a transparent greenish yellow pigment with high tinting strength.
Permanence
Chromophytal Yellow PY 128 has excellent lightfastness, although some have suggested that its discovery is still too recent for it to be classified as a permanent pigment.
Pigment Name
PY43-Brown Ochre
Chemical Name
iron(III)-oxide, partly hydrated
Chemical Formula
Fe2O3(• H2O)
Properties
Brown Ochre provides artists with earthtones from cream to brown and is a dull, dark variety of Yellow Ochre. Its transparency varies widely from opaque shades to more transparent ones, which are valued for their use as glazes. It has good hiding power, produces a quick drying paint, and can be safely mixed with other pigments. The highest quality Brown Ochre comes from Cyprus, where it is yellow in its raw form and is roasted to get the deeper brown-red varieties that result when water is removed. (See Yellow Ochre, PY42/43.)
Permanence
Brown Ochre has excellent permanence.
Toxicity
Brown Ochre is non-toxic.
History
Ochre comes from the Greek word ochros, meaning pale yellow. It has been used since prehistoric times, and evidence of its use has been found in some of the earliest known cave paintings in Lascaux, France. It has also been called Goethite, after the German philosopher and mineralogist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832).
Pigment Name
PG38-Phthalo Green
Pigment Type
organic
Chemical Name
polybromopolychlorinated copper(II) phthalocyanine
Properties
Phthalo Green is a transparent, cool, bright, high intensity color used in oil and acrylics. It comes from a Phthalocyanine Blue pigment where most of the hydrogen atoms have been replaced with chlorine, forming highly stable molecules. Pigment PG38 differs from PG36 and PG7 in that a high portion of the chlorine atoms at the molecular level are replaced with bromine atoms. Bromine is reactively similar to chlorine, but causes a yellow shift that is especially noticeable in mixtures. Phthalo Green has similar pigment properties and permanence to Phthalo Blue. It is slow drying and an excellent base color for mixing a range of bright greens. Phthalo Green is considered a very good alternative to Viridian because it is intense and mixes well and can be used to emphasize mineral colors in various tints. However, its tinting strength is very high, so it can overpower other colors. Pigment PG38 has the strongest yellow shift of the variant forms of Phthalo Green.
Permanence
Phthalo Greens are completely lightfast and resistant to alkali, acids, solvents, heat, and ultraviolet radiation. They are currently used in inks, coatings, and many plastics due to their stability and are considered a standard pigment in printing ink and the packaging industry.
Toxicity
Pigment PG38 has no significant known hazards.
History
Pigment PG38 is the result of recent research in the manufacture of other Phthalo Green variants. Because its manufacture is more expensive than that of Pigment PG36, its use has been limited.
Pigment Name
PY53-Nickel Titanium Yellow
Pigment Type
inorganic
Chemical Name
mixed metal oxide
Chemical Formula
(Ti,Ni,Sb)O2
Properties
Nickel Titanium Yellow is one of the cleanest and brightest of the inorganic pigments. It has a low tinting strength and average to slow drying time.
Permanence
Nickel Titanium Yellow has excellent lightfastness and outstanding stability with regard to chemicals, weather, and heat. It is durable in exterior conditions.
Toxicity
Nickel Titanium Yellow is not considered toxic.
History
Nickel Titanium Yellow was developed in the 1960s.
