Comments about Shiva Oilstik Oil Paint - Cobalt Blue Hue, Regular
Shiva Oilstik paint products have been the mainstay of my pallette for decades. Sadly, due to poorly manufactured products, I am put in the position of finding another source of paint stick product. There is a difference in drying times from the older product, there is lack of density in the applied colors, and the hues do not match the older colors. The final dried surface does not resemble the texture nor flatness of the older product. Inconsistency of manufacture is a nail in the coffin of a product that is meant to be in existence forever. The owners of the Shiva product know that the lowering of standards on professional tools will put them out of business, maybe this is what they want, to gut the fine company for a few extra dollars. This a complaint about the entire Shiva line, not any one item, such as Cobalt Blue Hue, which costs the same as Cobalt Blue but is definitely not cobalt blue. This bait and switch is so transparent as to be laughable, what other humdingers are out there?

I've come to love these as an alternative to oil pastel in my mixed media work. They actually dry in a couple of days, unlike oil pastel which remains tacky.

I paint in oils , large format and I also love to draw. These are perfect for my work. They dry within a few days if I want to work over them and I can also blend them on the spot. I have been using them for many years and they are brilliant as they were 25 or 30 years ago.

I tried these and then got interested in oil painting. The colors are beautiful and once you get used to peeling off the skin that forms on the exposed end, they work great. I like to use them with W&N Liquin. I bought both from Blick. Good price and shipping was excellent.

I bought the fluorescent set and tried them two days ago. They're like using oil pastels in terms of texture, just much bigger size-wise. I used them to accent an oil painting. I added them to the underpainting and used them as highlights and accents within the painting process. I love them! After my first use, I ordered the white one, and I'd like to get all the colours eventually. They're amazing!!!

These are so awesome for adding the topmost surface to mixed media pieces. The only thing that isn't amazing about them is how expensive they are - that being said, I think if you use them for small details they last for a really long time.

I am thrilled to have these neon oil sticks (exactly as advertised) to use just as a lift to a painting . Used in small amounts they really enhance but are for the most part undetectable that they are neon. Shiva is the only brand that has these neon colours.

Lamp black is a very opaque, heavily staining black pigment that does not have much covering or tinting power. It is typically the most opaque black in watercolor form. Though a very pure black, it tends to muddy slightly in mixtures. Natural sources may be brownish or bluish in tone because of impurities. When used in oil paints, it is one of the slowest drying pigments, and should not be used in underpainting or applied in layers underneath other colors.
Permanence
Lamp Black is very lightfast and absolutely permanent. It is used in all techniques in permanent painting.
Toxicity

Carbon itself is not considered hazardous, however other combustion products that are hazardous are often present as impurities when Lamp Black is produced from natural materials. For this reason, commercial preparations of the pigment should be considered slightly toxic. Avoid skin contact and inhalation. Where such impurities are present, Lamp Black is a possible human carcinogen.

History
Lamp Black is a carbon based black traditionally produced by collecting soot (known as lampblack) from oil lamps. It has been used as a pigment since prehistoric times. It is the black found in Egyptian murals and tomb decorations and was the most popular black for fresco painting until the development of Mars Black.
