A beautiful, versatile, and durable medium, encaustics are a popular alternative to oil and acrylic paints. Each R&F Encaustic Paint color is heavily pigmented and carefully milled. Because no solvents are used, many health hazards associated with other art materials are eliminated.   Encaustics can be modeled, layered, carved, textured, sculpted, or combined with collage materials. No drying time required.


**Chromatic Tones Set of 6**  - This set features a soft palette of six pale tones in 40 ml cakes. It includes Brilliant Yellow Extra Pale, Celadon Green, Cerulean Grey, Green Gold Pale, Scarlet Extra Pale, and Ultramarine Blue Pale.


**Earth Tones, Set of 6, 40 ml blocks**  - This set of six 40 ml cakes features colors found in nature. It includes Blue Ochre, Brown Pink, Green Earth, Neutral White, Stil de Grain, and Unbleached Titanium.


**Painter's Dozen, Set of 12, 40 ml, Blocks**  - This limited-edition holiday set makes the perfect gift for the encaustic painter in your life! It includes one 40 ml encaustic cake each of Titanium White, Burnt Sienna, Unbleached Titanium, Chrome Oxide Green, Indigo, Ultramarine Blue Pale, Turkey Umber Pale, Manganese Violet, Alizarin Orange, Olive Yellow, Cobalt Blue, and Ancient Gold.

How to Use R&F Encaustic Paints

Soy wax (actually partially hydrogenated soybean oil) is an excellent alternative to paraffin for cleaning brushes. Soy beans are a renewable resource, unlike paraffin, which is a petroleum product. Soy wax is non-toxic, burns cleaner than paraffin, and is naturally biodegradable. Soy wax is also easier to remove than paraffin wax, so after the color has been cleaned out of the brush, the brush can be washed with soap and water and is reusable in other mediums.

R&F Hot Plates - Side view of Encaustic Hot Plate

The R&F Hot Plate is the perfect tool for working with encaustic paints. They provide a platform on which to keep knives and brushes warm and ready for use. They also make a great heated surface for mixing colors. The aluminum plate is available in 12" × 12" (30 cm × 30 cm) with a 1/4" (6.4 mm) thick surface. The surface is made of thick aluminum steel alloy and have been anodized to prevent discoloration of several of the light pigments. Heat is conducted evenly across the entire surface, making the plates ideal for use with palette cups (sold separately), or for mixing colors directly on the surface. 

These R&F Encaustics Palette Cups can be used to melt large amounts of paint at one time.  Can be used to keep colors pure or to save mixes that you have made.  Constructed of a heavy aluminum and steel alloy.

Beeswax is the chief component in encaustic paint. R&F White Beeswax has been decolorized by mechanical filtration, rather than through bleaching which breaks the wax down. You can use Beeswax as the prime ingredient, along with damar resin, for making your own encaustic medium. You can also use it for encaustic without the resin, but the surface will be less hard, less polishable, more dust-attractive, and have a lower melting temperature. A good ratio is 9 parts wax to 2 parts resin. You can also use straight beeswax to give an initial priming coat to your panel or paper for encaustic.

R&F Damar Resin Crystals allow wax to be buffed to a higher, more translucent surface and helps prevent blooming in the wax.  Damar is a hard natural resin that comes from a family of deciduous trees that grow in the East Indies. Damar resin is the most common ingredient for hardening the beeswax and raising its melting temperature.

R&F Encaustic Medium is recommended to form transparencies and extend paints. It is encaustic paint without pigment.   Created with the same 100% pure, mechanically filtered beeswax and dammar resin as the R&F Encaustic Paints, this medium maintains film hardness and prevents blooming.

R&F Handmade Paints has introduced a new bagged Encaustic Medium in pellet form.  This medium is 45% less expensive by weight due to an innovative manufacturing process.
