Need to season and prepare a wood artist palette for its first use?

Some painting palettes must be seasoned or prepared before use to prevent them from absorbing the vehicles from paint. This is also to provide a good surface and add a neutral tone that assists in color mixing and comparison of chromatic colors. Wooden artist palettes used for oil painting should be sealed before use. Some painters simply apply linseed oil to their oil painting palette with a towel and allow the color of the natural wood as their mixing base. Others prefer mixing an oil paint color to coat their palette; using colors ranging from white to gray to warm neutral tones. Titanium white mixed with raw umber is a good choice. While not required, artist palettes made of impermeable materials may be prepared or toned. Hard-board art palettes with a pre-coated white surface will not absorb the vehicle from paint; however they can be toned to a pleasant neutral by rubbing on a thin coat of ivory black or raw umber. The tempered glass palette is a favorite for acrylic painters. Dry paint can be easily scraped or peeled away, leaving the surface like new. To provide a neutral uniform mixing color, tape a sheet of toned color paper to the underside.
