Introductory Set of 8 Drawing Ink Colors

Winsor & Newton drawing inks have been used by artists since they were first introduced in the 1890's. Today, as back then, they are revered for their brilliant colors. Winsor makes these colored inks with soluble dyes in a shellac solution which means you can combine them to make your own optical color mixtures as well as dilute them with distilled water to reduce the color strength or increase its transparency. The inks are fast drying, water resistant & transparent and most artists apply them using dip pens or watercolor brushes.

  • When applying with a brush, take care to rinse your brushes in water while you are working to keep the ink from drying hard in your brush's bristles. Should that happen, Winsor recommends using methylated spirits to dissolve the color then washing with warm water and soap.
  • Dye-based drawing inks are not lightfast like pigmented colors and therefore are not recommended for display in lighted areas
  • Not recommended for use with fountain pens or airbrush because the ink's binder can clog nozzles and nibs.
  • The Henry Collection contains 8 introductory colors in 14ml resealable bottles. Included colors are:
    • Black (Indian Ink)*
    • Blue
    • Carmine
    • Canary Yellow
    • Emerald
    • Nut Brown
    • Orange
    • Violet

* Winsor Newton's Black Indian Ink is based on carbon black and is an archival permanent color. It is water resistant and based on shellac which allows you to paint washes over this color.

For many years I have been using these inks, first as a high school teacher & also in my own practice. They are clear & brilliant & easy to use. A little goes a long way. Wonderful pared with india ink sketches either as a loose wash or ditailed colour areas. Be careful not to contaminate them with a dirty brush. I use an eye dropper to put each colour on a palette. Long lasting in the bottles.
