Experience the enduring qualities of the Masters' Paints...

Historically inspired lead white has been painstakingly researched to match the consistencies of traditional oil paints using carefully selected materials. Utrecht's Flemish White offers the genuine experience of paint hand-made according to the best documentation of Dutch Golden Age art materials.

The Pigment

Lead Carbonate offers excellent optical, handling and drying properties favored by artists for centuries. Lead white enhances permanence in paint films; its low oil content makes it ideal for underpainting. Although some brands have used other pigments (lead sulfate, lead/zinc blends) in creating their "Flemish White" colors, Utrecht's research and development team chose Lead Carbonate as the pigment for their Flemish White because of its exceptional versatility, consistency and proven long-term performance.

The Vehicle

Dispersing white pigments in more neutral-colored oils is known to have been a common practice in many of the Northern schools during the 17th century. The treatise of William Beurs instructs that white pigments should be ground in the "very best poppy oil"; many other documents of the period similarly recommend oils other than linseed for brilliant, silvery whites. Our expert team choose to use safflower oil because of its neutral color and excellent performance in oil paints. Safflower is light in color with drying properties similar to poppy oil, yet remains flexible.

The Process

Utrecht's Flemish White oil paint is hand mulled in small batches, not mechanically milled. This painstaking method is labor-intensive, requires a high degree of skill yet is worth it as it gives you unique consistencies that can not be achieved any other way.

The Finished Product

Utrecht Flemish White is ropy in consistency and will facilitate thick impasto consistent with traditional Dutch and Flemish techniques where heavy paint is used to communicate light, both for direct techniques and where a heavy underpainting will be covered with subsequent transparent layers.

  • Flemish White, My First Experience with lead whites

When I got my tube of Flemish white, I was amazed at the purity and vibrancy of this white. I used it for the highlights on a painting I was just finishing and I am impressed with how well it pops. I will definitely use this product again.

  • excellent lay down white

Utrecht makes two excellent lead whites. Flake white has more body, probably has a tad of wax. Flemish white is ropey and lays down very nicely. Both are very opaque unlike other flake whites I have tried from other manufacturers, and Utrecht's are not only in my opinion superior paints, they are a real value. Both these whites mix with colors without dulling their vibrancy. They are just really great whites. After using these for a year or two, I have a hard time with Titanium Whites. It is easy to understand why the lead whites have been the standard of oil painting for centuries.

  • Reunion with Utrecht!

Some years (perhaps decades!) ago when I was an art student in New York,Utrecht was my number one source for oil and acrylic paint, raw canvas, paint brushes as well as paper/drawing et al.My primary reasons for choosing Utrecht were price to value ratio as well as proximity to my school location as well as the ability to get quality paint and raw canvas under one roof. These many years later I find myself returning to Utrecht.I was drawn during an online search to the outstanding value on Utrecht brand Flemish and Flake white oil paints as I was looking to replenish my lead whites in my palette. The sale price makes the price to quality value ratio an absolute no brainer.Utrecht paints are high quality and hold their own with any major name brand. Now,as in the past,I look to Utrecht for high quality to cost ratio.Unlike the past, in my maturity I have come to value that the Utrecht paint label is not only manufactured by the company itself (and not a private label brand derived from the altered original formula of another manufacturer as with other art suppliers) but also that it is manufactured in the United States. In this economy that really matters to me. In closing, though this is my first Utrecht purchase in more than 20 years it will certainly not be my last!
