Stillman & Birn sketchbooks are appropriate for studies rendered with dry media and ink, as well as mixed media artwork. The robust paper is internally and surfaced sized to provide exceptional wet strength for layering of wet media, lifting of pigment, and repeated erasing without damage.

Not only can artists combine techniques on the same surface, they can use both drawing and painting techniques on the same surface. For example, a line drawing in ink can be followed with watercolor, or a watercolor underdrawing can be the base for layers of colored pencil.

  • Stillman & Birn Bound notebooks

    Experience: PROFESSIONAL

I first became aware of the Stillman & Birn bound notebooks when I was shopping in Utrecht's store in downtown Washington DC. Examining the notebook in the store, I realized that the paper was unusual in quality. I bought one and have been delighted with the character of the paper. I've stocked up on some extras for future use. For finished drawings and/or studies this paper is very responsive. I use colored pencil and watercolor pencils. The paper's tooth is, in my view, nearly perfect. It's works exceptionally well with graphite pencil also. It is a wonderful bound notebook -- has the best bound paper I've encountered so far for use with media where a proper tooth is desired.
