Type 13 Belgian linen canvas is a first class portrait linen due to its tight (single) weave and extra fine smooth uniform tooth texture. Oil primed.
The Claessens name is synonymous with fine linen all over the world. Victor Claessens started his company in 1906 when he began producing his top-quality artist linen canvas. The scarcity of this type of linen canvas in post World War II New York is what motivated Utrecht's founder, Norman Gulamerian, a Brooklyn-based painter, to start his business sourcing this fine linen canvas from Belgium, a business now known as Utrecht Art Supplies. Now, more than a century after Claessens was founded, the company still makes its linen canvas in the original building where Victor Claessens started. His descendents have made a conscious choice to keep a small-scale approach to artist canvas manufacturing and to honor the traditional methods for treating and preparing the canvas surface. The result is a museum quality linen canvas without equal.

Type 13 is a oil primed Belgian linen that is professional-grade, woven to exacting standards and prepared by hand.
Type 13 (also known as 13J Linen) is tightly woven in a single pattern to produce an ultra smooth uniform tooth texture that makes this linen a first class portrait canvas as well as for other fine detail techniques.
