I used to be a Essdee fan, but I found it impossible to obtain their original product. What's peddled as Essdee these days is a ridiculously inferior product, thin and flimsy. And since I've switched to this, I've found that the Essdee background coloring was not as white. That said, the clay surface here is a bit thin and quite a bit harder. I used to work in multiple layers of color, counting on the depth to retain some of the underlayers. You won't get that here. It's all surface. But since I'm primarily working in black and white these days, that isn't a problem. And I like the Masonite backing. It hangs heavy in a mat, but is durable in storage. I've really come to appreciate that durability.

Great product for painters!

I actually prefer clayboard to gesso board for small to medium size oil painting. Paint slides around on the surface like an oil ground, yet it is absorbent enough for good adhesion. And, colors seem to dry richer and darker, allowing for a wider range of under painting values, which makes the final result easier to achieve. I highly recommend these.
