You may have heard some discussion lately about acrylic paints and problems with adhesion to pre-primed acrylic gesso surfaces. We wanted to take this opportunity to explain the testing employed to determine the problem and that the Utrecht line of pre-primed canvas is not effected.
How this came to be... The Golden Paint Company recently advised us that they had received a number of complaints regarding acrylic colors (paints) failing to maintain proper adhesion (stick) on pre-primed acrylic gesso surfaces. Golden, through technical testing, specifically identified the problem was directly associated with certain acrylic primed canvases, being produced in Asia. In principal Golden’s recent tests, included: 1. A water droplet test ( for quick assessment and visual verification) 2. An acrylic adhesion time test (for checking paint films at suggested time intervals 24, 48, 72 hours and 1, 2 weeks). We made the decision to subject our canvas line to the same tests performed by Golden and demonstrated that all our canvas products clearly pass the tests. Our pre-stretched acrylic primed canvases, which are the subject of focus here, are specifically formulated to provide excellent adhesion for oil and acrylic mediums. On the other hand, if artists decide to prime their own canvases our line of gesso is widely recognized as the finest acrylic gesso products available today.
