I was born in Munhall, PA and grew up in Dormont. I am proud to be a Pittsburgher, having lived in the South Side Flats since 1986 until moving in 1992 into our Victorian home on the Slopes which I restored with my wife Maria. I tended bar at Mario's from 1986-2007 which fueled my art career, but now paint full time. Beginning at the age of 13 and after 10 years of suffering with ulcerative colitis I had life saving surgery and now wear a permanent ileostomy. While recuperating from surgery I studied art, many of the old masters which inspired me to begin painting as a form of therapy.
My paintings were selling, and after my first showing at the Pittsburgh Aviary Wildlife Art Show the demand for my work grew. My studio on the historic South Side Slopes is where I create each painting by mixing enamels and Mon sand, giving my artwork an unusual texture. Sand from my client's collections is often incorporated into the commissioned pieces. The fascinating people I meet, current events and life experiences inspire me. One of my most inspiring paintings sent me to Megjugorje, Yugoslavia in 1980. The challenge was to transfer onto canvas my feelings of the little village where there have been reported sightings of the Blessed Mother. Many of my paintings can be purchased as limited edition prints. 5 of my prints are part of the Pittsburgh Collection at the NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The Heinz Field original hangs in the lobby office at Heinz Field. The original Adam Taliaferro-Miracle in the Making painting hangs in the Sports Museum at Penn State, and my Hollyhocks print was on the set of NBC's Will & Grace finale May 2006. Former President George H.W.Bush Sr. 41st President of the USA saw my art and contacted the studio to request a portrait. I created the painting with enamels and South Side sand! My painting of President George H.W.Bush Sr. is currently on display at: The George Bush Presidential Library & Museum at Texas A&M. For years I have been involved with many local and national charities raising much needed funds for their causes. It is important for me to "give back", my art enables me to help others in a unique way. I did not have art lessons or the interest in art, I simply didn't plan any of this. All I had was the will to live, to do well and help others. I am so very grateful for this fantastic ride. Jacob Chalkley is a recent alumnus of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. While attending SAIC, he studied visual communication and computer animation. Much of his personal work derives from a nique since of humor which has resulted in his work being featured at the “Fear Lite” art exhibit in Slade Studios London, “Who Arted?” 2007 Lollapalooza art exhibition, and Utrecht’s own “What Does Chicago Mean to You?” 2006 art exhibition.
Jacob enjoys longs walks on the beach, holding hands, candle-light dinners, and talking for hours about nothing. He taught himself to sing the alphabet backwards and on his 21st birthday, he went to a casino and bet all of his money on black at a roulette table…and won. Everyday he makes it a point to learn a unique skill that could be used on an application for a late-night dating show. Some of his life’s ambitions include being able to sign his checks with a stamp and to be featured in a tabloid. Commercially, Jacob has worked for Victory Records (the nation’s largest independent record label), Stanaszek-Goodwin Design Partnership (SGDP), in addition to freelancing for various other clients. He also has an invested interest in music. He is currently finishing his first independently produced full length album in which he plays guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, as well as handles vocal duties. More of Jacob’s work can be viewed at www.jenay.net/jake . He is currently seeking work in sunny California and sometimes sunny Chicago. Here are some examples of Jake's work: (click to enlarge)
