What does "contain recycled materials" mean?

You probably recognize the icon below. It is the universally recognized symbol for recycling. 

Because this logo is a public domain icon, it can be used without discretion by anyone.  We have adopted the below icon to denote products we sell that contain recycled materials and we follow the FTC's guidelines for environmental marketing in describing those products.

Those guidelines basically say that if you say your product contains recycled materials, you should tell the consumer what portion, by weight, of the product is recycled materials and whether it's pre-consumer or post-consumer waste.  You will see those terms in our product descriptions where it is applicable.

"Post-consumer" means the paper that you return to recycling centers. "Pre-consumer" means by-products of paper manufacturing that normally would enter the waste stream and are instead recycled back into producing another product.  So you might see a product marked "Contains 50% recycled materials including up to 30% post-consumer fiber".

Did you know ...

• Most types of paper are recyclable and newspapers have been recycled profitably for decades. According to TAPPI, a paper industry trade association, almost 70% of newspapers are recycled today.
• According to the EPA, recycling 1,820 lbs. of paper saves 17 mature trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 2 barrels of oil and 4,100 kilowatt-hours of electricity — enough energy to power the average American home for five months. 
• According to TAPPI, the average American household consumes 700 lbs of paper per year.   At that rate,  if you recycle a little more than 1/2 of your paper, you save enough electricity to power your home for a month. 
• TAPPI reports that as far back as 1999 the US was recycling 45% percent of its paper consumption and today recycled paper contributes over 38% of the fiber used to produce the US's paper consumption.  
• Finally, according to TAPPI, the US is the global leader in recycling paper, accounting for over a third of the total worldwide paper recovery.
