Gouache is an opaque type of watercolor that is handled very differently from transparent watercolors

The important distinction between them is that the watercolorist applies the paint in transparent washes and uses the paper as the source of all whites; the gouache painter mixes colors directly with white paint to create each of the hues and tints and completely covers the surface of the paper resulting in a thick velvety surface texture. Gouache can be painted in layers and is more "forgiving", in that it can be removed and repainted. Designers gouache is used in both fine art and commercial applications.
