Drawing board & illustration board is ideal for watercolor & acrylic, airbrush and all manner of drawing media including, ink, charcoal and markers

Illustration board provides a stiff, strong surface to work on without the need for mounting. They come in various weights and finishes. Drawing board has drawing paper mounted on both sides of a heavyweight artboard. Bristol board is perfect for wet media like watercolor, acrylic and gouache, but equally suited to dry media like charcoal, graphite and pastels. Illustration board also makes a sturdy surface for collage projects or model building.

Hot press vs. cold press board:

Hot press board has a smooth surface making it excellent for producing sharp, fine lines. It is ideal for pen and ink, markers and airbrush. Mounting board has a smooth surface that is ideal for mounting with adhesives or applying transfer lettering. Cold press board has a slightly textured surface with “tooth”. This textured surface is preferred for watercolor, gouache, acrylic, tempera, charcoal, crayon, pastel and pencil.

Plate vs. vellum surface:

Plate surface has an ultra-smooth finish that is unsurpassed for detailed work with technical pen, airbrush and marker. Vellum surface has a toothy finish that is excellent for pencil, charcoal, pastel and oil pastel as well as pen, airbrush, and light washes.
